Chondrule-Forming Shock Fronts in the Solar Nebula: A Possible Unified Scenario for Planet and Chondrite Formation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Chondrules are mm-sized spherules found throughout primitive, chondritic meteorites. Flash heating by a shock front is the leading explanation of their formation. However, identifying a mechanism for creating shock fronts inside the solar nebula has been difficult. In a gaseous disk capable of forming Jupiter, the disk must have been marginally gravitationally unstable at and beyond Jupiter’s orbit. We show that this instability can drive inward spiral shock fronts with shock speeds of up to ∼ 10 km s at asteroidal orbits, sufficient to account for chondrule formation. Mixing and transport of solids in such a disk, combined with the planet-forming tendencies of gravitational instabilities, results in a unified scenario linking chondrite production with gas giant planet formation. Evaporation of nebular fines during chondrule formation
Studies of matrix in primitive chondrites provide our only detailed information about the fine fraction (diameter <2 μm) of solids in the solar nebula. A minor fraction of the fines, the presolar grains, offers information about the kinds of materials present in the molecular cloud that spawned the Solar System. Although some researchers have argued that chondritic matrix is relatively unaltere...

Introduction: Chondrules are free from trapped noble gases [e.g., 1], which is attributed to complete degassing during the chondrule formation. However, Okazaki et al. [2] discovered the Ar-rich trapped noble gases in enstatite chondrite chondrules. The Ar-rich gases were formed via incomplete degassing (He and Ne depletion) of implanted solar gases during the chondrule formation [2]. Since sol...

Thermal models and radiometric ages for meteorites show that the peak temperatures inside their parent bodies were closely linked to their accretion times. Most iron meteorites come from bodies that accreted <0.5 Myr after CAIs formed and were melted by 26Al and 60Fe, probably inside 2 AU. Rare carbon-rich differentiated meteorites like ureilites probably also come from bodies that formed <1 My...
متن کاملA nebular origin for chondritic fine-grained phyllosilicates.
Hydrated minerals occur in accretionary rims around chondrules in CM chondrites. Previous models suggested that these phyllosilicates did not form by gas-solid reactions in the canonical solar nebula. We propose that chondrule-forming shock waves in icy regions of the nebula produced conditions that allowed rapid mineral hydration. The time scales for phyllosilicate formation are similar to the...
متن کاملAn Experimental Investigation of the Planetary Embryo Bow Shock Model as a Chondrule Formation Mechanism
Introduction: Chondrules are sub-mm to mm-sized igneous inclusions that can comprise up to ~80% of the primitive meteorites called chondrites, and provide us with snapshots of the solar nebula. They are the key to understanding the early history of the Solar System and the formation of terrestrial planets. Chondrules formed in the first few million years (Myr) of the Solar System’s history [e.g...
